Killzone 3………..D

October 6, 2010 6 comments

Part of Eurogamer Expo 2010

If only your eyes were able to process visual information in 3 dimensions, loser.

Killzone 3 impressed the hell out of me. This pre Alpha build was solid and completely stable the whole time I saw it, on top of that the 3D was absolutely pristine.

There were two pairs of 3D glasses per TV so spectators could view without thinking they had a concussion. I duly put them on and saw the blurriness clear up, but I was still seeing the double image. My job enables me to view 3D content on an almost daily basis so I’m no newbie to the scene. My eyes adjusted 20 seconds later and the image just came to me.

A nicely interpreted depth solution exists in Killzone 3. This is a noncey way of saying all the planes blend seamlessly together, and importantly the cross hair stays accurate and true across whichever depth it encounters.

That guy has a ten inch penis, the one behind him is circumcised. I don't know how I came to be aware of these details of my friends' genitals or why I brought it up at this point. Some things just defy explanation. Like why people find Lady Gaga attractive.

These guys are in a war zone right now

Onto gameplay, I’ve declared my lack of passion for the FPS genre numerous times but here they just have it right. Bodies have weight, they don’t take too many or too few shots. Also, jetpack. I almost bought Dark Void purely on the strength that it had a jetpack in it. Here it is short burst and more of an extended jump tool, but you can use it to advance your position and take the strategic upper hand in a confrontation so it has incidental use, making it more than just a gimmick.

This was overall the best of the 3 3D games there.

Will 3DS Be Released in October?

Nintendo has already announced that they will pimp the 3DS as a playable demo at this year’s E3, now CVG claim that it will be released later this year, if you have eyes you will know I mean October.

This is certainly in keeping with Nintendo’s Modus Operandi of keeping lead time to a minimum to avoid buzz fatigue. Back at their Media Summit in February they announced Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid Other M release dates for May 23rd and June 27th respectively, a lead time of only 3-4 months. Compare this with Gears of War 3 which we know about a year in advance and almost any other game which we anticipate at least 6 months ahead.

It’s a very business-like approach, a heads down “let’s just make the game and release it” attitude which I like. But then their biggest audience; the casual gamer, will not read the gaming press and will only find out about it through general consumer channels. By this rationale they don’t need a long hype to sell games, just a short build up in the mainstream advertising circuit.

Having a playable product at E3 then revealing a release date for three months later is a big “no nonsense” bang whichever way you look at it.

Philips Unveils 2010 line up of 3D TVs

February 24, 2010 Leave a comment

Philips’ will be releasing their first line up of 3D TVs this year, with their entire 9000 series being enabled, and all except the 32inch of the 8000 range.

As with all upcoming 3D TV models they will display natively according to whatever input you have. You have the option to upgrade to a 3D package which contains a wireless transmitter and two pair of active shutter glasses, with extra specs costing………extra.

This is how all TVs will become 3D ready, every TV will eventually have the function much like HD is standard now. The TV will simply be a good TV foremost and you have the option to utilize the 3D function.

Of course you need a 3D source.

Well Sony has pretty much got your sweet back door covered. Not only will the PS3 be upgraded via firmware to be able to output 3D this summer, but Sony will be launching a 3D-TV channel in 2011 in association with IMAX.

Blu-Rays will be able to support the 3D format so expect BD players advertised as such before too long. ESPN has plans to join the fun and with Sky+ HD boxes being 3D upgradeable, there’s no reason why lots more networks will launch similar products.

As I say, eventually all TVs sold will be 3D ready, you wont be able to avoid owning one and it’ll just be a matter of buying the glasses and transmitter and let’s face it, they’ll be bundled with the telly in a year. After the mad rush of gimmicky content things will settle down and studios and networks will realize not everything needs to be in 3D,can you imagine the migraine? It will become just another option for home entertainment and you will be able to select 3D appropriate material at your leisure.

Great.
